Equator Jacket
A lightweight travel jacket with in-built air conditioning.
- Lightweight jacket weighing 450 grams
- Made with silk-like cotton from the Nile Delta
- In-built ventilation system with 228 laser-cut vents
Home to some of the hottest and most humid places on the planet, the equator carves through dense tropical jungles, warm seas, and crowded cities. Instead of seasons or temperature changes you’re more likely to be hit by a wall of heat, sun, rain and humidity. But as global temperatures rise and climate zones shift, designing clothing for the equator is like designing for our future.
So the Equator Jacket is built to keep you comfortable in all 40,000km of one of the most extreme environments we currently inhabit and one that’s set to grow. The jacket starts with one of the lightest and softest materials on the planet – a rare, silk-like cotton that’s only found in the Nile Delta and only grows in the years when the rain, soil and wind conditions are perfect.
Lightweight and elastic, the Equator Jacket dries fast after downpours and humidity and is engineered with an advanced ventilation system built with 228 laser-cut vents in the pockets and another 12 vents across the back and chest. It’s blended with ultrafine nylon and elastane for softness, durability and stretch, and it’s designed to work with our Equator Pants as an ultra lightweight travel suit to keep you cool in the heat.
Technical Details
Our Equator gear has been worn everywhere from Death Valley California and the Australian Outback, to the deserts of Oman.
We turn cotton into a high performance material
While Karnak Menoufi is already extremely soft and robust, we’ve added durability and stretch by combining it with elastane and an ultrafine nylon in Italy. And as jackets typically take more of a beating than shirts, we’ve woven more nylon into the cotton than we do with the Equator Shirt, to add more strength. The result is an advanced, lightweight material that feels extremely soft next to your skin.
The jacket is engineered with 228 laser-cut vents to keep you cool in the hottest places on the planet.
The ventilation system works like in-built air-con
Designed for hot, humid and arid environments, the Equator Jacket is engineered with the same ventilation system as the Equator Shirt, Equator Pants and Equator Shorts. Inside the side pockets you’ll find laser-cut and bonded panels with rows of perforated vents, which are designed to let air flow through the jacket simply by opening the pockets. And another 12 larger vents run across the back and down the front of the jacket.
The Equator Jacket is built from a rare, silk-like cotton that’s only found in the Nile Delta and only grows when the rain, soil and wind conditions are perfect.
It’s fast drying from rain and humidity
Rainstorms and humidity are going to soak you one way or another at the equator, so the key is about drying really fast, rather than trying to avoid getting wet. The material is lightweight and elastic so it dries quickly, making the jacket as at home in a rainforest as it is in a city. And the extra airflow from the ventilation will help your skin dry faster at the same time as the jacket.
Life at the equator offers us a glimpse of our future – a world of non-stop sun, heat, humidity and rainstorms.
