The Firefly Jacket
A high performance, five-layered, weatherproof shell built with two colour-shifting membranes.
- A 400 gram jacket built with 5 layers of technology
- Constructed with fluorescent and phosphorescent membranes
- Waterproof and windproof, with high spec detailing
The Firefly Jacket is a high performance, five-layered, 400 gram, waterproof and windproof shell built with two colour-shifting membranes. Normally we like to say what colour the piece of clothing you’re buying is. But with The Firefly Jacket that’s not so easy. With one of the membranes infused with a phosphorescent compound, and the other built with a fluorescent compound, the jacket changes colour throughout the day and night as the light conditions change around it – so it can be anything from copper, to orange, to glow-in-the-dark green, to a yellow that’s so trippy under UV light that you look like you’ve wandered off the set of Avatar.
Of course this kind of multi-layered luminescence has been found in nature long before we existed. Possums, sharks, frogs and flying squirrels have been flexing biofluorescent fur and skin for millions of years. But you won’t find it in clothes… until now.
Built to be worn in any conditions night or day, the jacket is fully seam sealed, all the zips are waterproof, and you’ll find Velcro straps on both the cuffs that can be fastened tight in heavy rain. There’s an elasticated drawcord at the waist, and a hidden elasticated drawcord in the hood, both of which can be tightened at high speed. And the two large side pockets are protected by storm flaps that curve down at the bottom to help rain roll straight off.

From 1 colour shifting membrane… to 2
When we released our first glow-in-the-dark clothing – the Solar Charged Jacket – it was engineered with an ultra-thin membrane infused with a phosphorescent compound that absorbed light and glowed green like kryptonite. While Superman probably hated it, other people loved it. WIRED named it Gear of the Year. And TIME Magazine put it on their Best Inventions list. With The Firefly Jacket we’ve gone from 1 colour shifting membrane, to 2.
The Firefly Jacket is built with two colour-shifting membranes – one phosphorescent, the other fluorescent.
The Firefly Jacket changes colour throughout the day and night as the light conditions change around it.
The different colour states of The Firefly Jacket
If you’re indoors during the day then the jacket is a flat copper colour. If you’re outside in cloudy or low light conditions then it’s the same kind of colour but with a subtle glow.
Luminescence is everywhere in nature
This kind of luminescence has been found in birds, insects, sea creatures and mammals for millions of years. So alongside glow-in-the-dark sharks and frogs that look like they’re headed to a rave, you’ll also find platypuses, possums, bats, echidnas and flying squirrels with biofluorescent fur. Scientists are yet to figure out a solid evolutionary explanation for this particular trait – as it appears to transcend species, habitats, and behaviours. So before lighting yourself up with a blacklight in the woods at night for fun, you might want to make sure a flying squirrel doesn’t mistake you for its mate.
Possums, sharks, frogs and flying squirrels have been flexing biofluorescent fur and skin for millions of years. But this is the first chance for humans to get in on the action.
Under a blacklight it’s like something out of Avatar
The best way to see the fluorescent membrane at night is with a black light. If you don’t have one lying around, you can get one for about $20. It works like a bright yellow paintbrush on the jacket adding layer after layer of brightness, and makes you look like you’ve wandered off the set of Avatar.
Or you can draw pictures on it
The fabric reacts so rapidly you can see the jacket’s tech at work anywhere, but the darker the environment you’re in, the brighter the glow will appear. Drawing on it with a flashlight or head torch is one of the more fun things you can do. As well as being a cool party trick, the jacket could be life-saving on a mountain. No search team would ever fly past a human-sized firefly.
