As we continue to look for new, low impact ways to dye clothing, we’ve turned to the colouring tools of early man – minerals, rocks, and soils. Minerals don’t just tell the story of life on Earth, they also tell the story of colour. When our solar system settled into its current shape around 4.5 billion years ago, Earth was created by a series of galactic collisions. Tectonic plates began to form. And geological life and biological life fused together to create vast mineral deposits in the Earth’s upper crust. So when prehistoric man first picked up a prehistoric paintbrush, they turned to the ground around them. Today, instead of using those minerals to paint cave walls, we’re using them to dye clothing. Our Mineral T Shirt is garment dyed in a giant bath of hematite. There are only 2 by-products of this process – sediment, and water. Both of which can go straight back into nature.

Ultralight all-weather pants

The Planet Earth Ultralight Pants are lightweight, softshell pants that stretch like high performance sports gear and repel water and dirt with biomimetic technology. They’re part of a system of ultralight, highly technical all-weather clothing designed to take you across every climate, environment and terrain on the surface of Earth. Each pair starts out with advanced material technology developed by Schoeller in Switzerland, before being assembled at a cutting-edge Portuguese factory that builds skin suits for elite Olympic athletes.

Designed to work anywhere

While the pants are highly elastic, breathable and water repellent, they don’t look or feel like sports gear. And that’s because the Nylon yarn we’ve used to weave the material is engineered with a textured surface. It gives the pants a soft feel and minimalist look so they fit in anywhere. So if your days involve transitioning from trails to the office, or you just like to move around fast and light, these pants will work anywhere.

Water and dirt repellent with plant-based technology

The pants repel water and dirt with microscopic technology borrowed from plants. If you look at the leaf of any ‘vascular land plant’ out in nature you’ll find it’s coated by a waxy protective layer called a cuticle. This super thin film prevents water and dirt from penetrating the leaf’s tissues, as well as protecting it from pathogens, fungi and uncontrolled evaporation. The material the pants are made from mimics this natural mechanism to help them shed water and dirt.

Microscopic chains that mimic plant leaves

The fabric replicates the self-cleaning effect produced by cuticles with microscopic chains wrapped around each individual fibre. These helix structure chains spiral round the fibres to reduce surface tension, forcing water and mud to simply roll off the surface of the pants. The technology works without using any toxic fluorocarbons while keeping you and the pants dry and clean at the same time.

Fast drying and breathable

This same technology also helps the pants to dry out fast when they do get wet. And while some water repellent coatings can affect breathability by clogging the pores of a material, the chain structure round the fibres means sweat vapour can still escape from the inside.

Ultra lightweight at 275 grams

Weighing 275 grams the pants are phenomenally lightweight and packable. When they’re on you’ll hardly notice them, or they fold down small enough to make it into almost any bag. Pair them with our Planet Earth Ultralight Shell and your whole system will only weigh 625 grams. And while lots of ultralight clothing is completely stripped back to save weight, we’ve not sacrificed features like zipped pockets that make the pants as practical as they are lightweight.

They come with extreme two way stretch

The pants are constructed with 5% elastane for extreme horizontal two way stretch. They’re so soft, lightweight and stretchy you can move in any direction without feeling resistance. And their articulated construction at the knees helps to keep you comfortable whether you’re running, climbing, or sitting on a long haul flight.

Two zipped side pockets

At either side of the pants you’ll find two pockets that fasten with concealed zippers. The zippers lock into place and come fitted with grippy rubber pullers, so your fingers won’t slip even if you’re soaked or sweating hard.

A back pocket built for speed

At the back of the pants there’s a top-entry pocket at the centre of the waistband. Just like you’d find on trail running gear the pocket is integrated into the waistband, so anything you’re carrying inside sits snugly and won’t shift up and down if you’re moving at speed.

An elasticated waistband and cord adjuster

The elasticated waistband tightens with a bungee cord and lock for speed and simplicity. Just push the button on the lock and pull the cord to tighten the pants as much as you need. To loosen them simply push the button and pull the lock away from you to release.
