While the Indestructible Hoodie is just 1 millimetre thick, it can withstand a 75kmph fall and drag on concrete – we know this as we took it into the lab and beat the crap out of it by recreating real-world conditions which would quickly destroy most gear, from blunt force trauma to sudden impact from high speed falls.
It also comes with concealed side pockets that can’t be torn off. Every critical seam on the hoodie has been stitched with double lines of heavy-duty thread which are reinforced with woven tape on the underside. And as no one’s ever attempted to make a hoodie like this before, we built it with the help of a team who make body suits for pro motorbike riders, fire-proof clothes for the military, and chainsaw-proof boots.
The material itself is unlike anything you’ve worn before. We’ve taken the world’s strongest fibre™ that you normally find in bulletproof vests and the sides of tanks – Dyneema® – and blended it with elastane, to create a hoodie that combines extreme four-way stretch with extreme strength.

Technical Details

Stainless steel is taking us to Mars
While the human body is not built for the cryogenic temperatures of outer space, stainless steel thrives out there. At about 2.7 Kelvin, or -270°C, its strength increases by 50%, which is one of the many reasons the entire outer body of the SpaceX Starship will be built out of it. The most powerful rocket ever built has been developed so it can not only be reused, but relaunch just an hour after each landing. So stainless steel’s toughness and extreme temperature resistance won it the job. It can cope with temperatures of up to 870°C – allowing Starship to withstand the hundreds of re-entries into Mars and Earth’s atmospheres it’s being designed for.


It’s built with the same material as the first SpaceX Starship bound for Mars.


The 20th century was practically built from stainless steel. Now it has its sights set on building the 21st century too. Starting with rockets and clothing.

How the jacket looks and feels
It doesn’t feel like you’re wearing metal when you put the Steel Field Jacket on. It’s malleable, soft and lightweight. But it holds its shape slightly more than normal materials, so each jacket develops unique crease patterns in areas like the sleeves. You’ll also feel a subtle grain under your fingers when you touch it – and these are the steel fibres you’ll be feeling. The shoulder construction looks like overlaid steel plates. And by combining 24% stainless steel with 76% nylon, we’ve created a fabric that appears to warp and shift as the light hits it.

It’s taken 4 years of R&D to turn stainless steel into a jacket you can just throw on.


In the cryogenic temperatures of outer space, stainless steel increases in strength by up to 50%.

It’s now the strongest metal we’re working with
While we’re only just beginning to discover the potential of steel in clothing, early lab tests show that adding it in the way we have, increases the material’s strength without adding weight. The material scores high in tensile strength tests – which is the force needed to break fibres when they’re pulled in opposite directions. And it has around double the strength of copper materials we’ve worked with. It also scores high in abrasion resistance tests.
