Our Lumber range is high strength gear built for hard living. Hundreds of years after lumberjacks built modern America by hand, we’ve been taking their default uniform and using modern technology to build our own high strength versions. From jeans woven with fibres 15x stronger than steel, to thornproof jackets with somewhere to hold your axe.

Minimalist and hardwearing, the Padded Lumberjacket is built with advanced Japanese materials and super-compact insulation. The outside is engineered with a reinforced and insulated collar, triple chain stitching, and a highly technical Japanese weave called ‘typewriter’ which is strong and resilient thanks to its density, but also super lightweight and soft.

While the middle layer is made from sheets of super-compact and breathable synthetic insulation that we’ve anchored down with stitched bartacks to reduce weight and bulk. It makes the jacket a rugged and versatile layer designed for lightweight warmth as the seasons change.

With a reinforced and insulated collar, triple chain stitching, and a middle layer made from sheets of super-compact and breathable synthetic insulation, the jacket is a rugged and versatile layer designed for lightweight warmth as the seasons change.

Super-compact insulation for lightweight warmth

Every jacket is built from a three-layered construction with a middle layer of super-compact synthetic insulation. Made entirely out of recycled plastic bottles, the insulation traps pockets of warm air around your body without adding bulk. It’s constructed in continuous sheets that we’ve anchored down with stitched bartacks to reduce weight, bulk and the potential for cold spots.

Constructed with a Japanese ‘typewriter’ weave

Both the outer shell and the inner lining of the jacket are made from an advanced weave called ‘typewriter’ – a unique Japanese fabric that gets its name from its high density structure. It was said that the chattering looms used to work so hard when they were weaving the fabric that they made a noise just like a typewriter. On a practical level this intricate process produces a fabric that’s strong and resilient thanks to its density, but also super lightweight and soft.

We use super soft but strong Pima cotton

The raw material we use to create our Japanese fabric is Pima cotton. Pima cotton is known for being rarer, softer and stronger than regular cotton thanks to its long fibres. When the long fibres are woven into fabric they leave fewer loose strands, helping to produce a material that’s soft and strong at the same time. After weaving we finish the fabric with a resin treatment which helps it to return to its shape when it gets creased, compressed or folded.

The insulation is breathable and fast-drying

Compared with real down plucked from ducks or geese the synthetic insulation is more breathable, making you less likely to overheat if you’re working up a sweat. Unlike down it will also keep insulating even if it gets wet, and it will dry out quicker too.

We triple-stitch it

The jacket is constructed with triple chain stitched seams in the critical areas of wear and stress like the arms. Instead of one line of thread you have three lines of super thick thread stitched right next to each other so it won’t snap like a conventional straight stitch can. It’s a technique usually found in heavy vintage denim and chore jacket manufacturing to create stronger clothes.

A resin treatment helps the jacket to return to its shape when it gets creased, compressed, or folded.

The collar is insulated and reinforced

The jacket buttons up to a pointed collar that’s filled with insulation, so if your neck is feeling the cold you can flip it up for warmth. The collar is also reinforced with heavy-duty zig zag stitching so it will hold its shape through the wind and rain.

Built with three pockets

On the left chest there’s a zipped patch pocket that securely fits a phone. You’ll find two side pockets lower down that let you tuck your hands in for warmth. Your hands are protected by a layer of insulation on the outside when they’re inside, and both pockets fasten with concealed metal snaps.
