Black Algae Jacket
A 3 layered coach jacket built with thermobonded eucalyptus and black algae.
- Dye made from algae waste
- Garment dyed for softness
- Three-layered material with rippled texture
While we’ve garment dyed simple clothes like t shirts and henleys in big baths of black algae before, we hadn’t tried fully submerging anything as complex as a fully finished three-layered, thermobonded jacket, with a core built from eucalyptus. And it turns out that when you submerge pulped eucalyptus in a giant bath of black algae, it reacts by violently shrinking. This then causes the outer layers of the jacket to fold over and bubble. And while the jacket stays beautifully soft, it creates an organic texture that looks halfway between a tree trunk and elephant skin.
Technical Details
Eucalyptus and algae combine to look like elephant skin
While we’ve garment dyed simple clothes like t shirts in big baths of black algae before, we hadn’t tried fully submerging anything as complex as a fully finished three-layered, thermobonded jacket, with a core built from eucalyptus. And it turns out that when you submerge pulped eucalyptus in black algae, the eucalyptus reacts by violently shrinking, which causes the thermobonded inner and outer layers of the jacket to fold over and bubble. And while the jacket stays beautifully soft, it creates a visual texture that looks halfway between elephant skin and a tree trunk.
While we’ve spent a lot of time and money creating effects like this in the past with our Mars Hoodies, here nature did the work for us.
Three-layered and thermobonded
Each jacket is constructed from a three-layered fabric engineered from organic cotton, recycled cotton and lyocell – a fibre that comes from pulped eucalyptus trees. A layer of lyocell is sandwiched in between an outer and inner layer of cotton, before all three layers are thermobonded together to make a single fabric. It’s a construction more commonly found in technical rain jackets. In this case it allows us to produce a material with all the softness and comfort of cotton, but with the density and structure needed for a robust jacket.
Four pockets and gun metal snaps
The jacket fastens down the middle with six gun metal snap fasteners with Vollebak detailing. It comes with the classic pointed collar. And there are two side pockets and two open inside pockets for your phone and wallet.
Our algae starts life in giant ponds
The algae we use starts life in huge open-air ponds where it grows by feeding on sunlight, carbon dioxide, water and nutrients. These ponds contain vast quantities of spirulina algae which absorb carbon dioxide and pump oxygen back out into the atmosphere. While the majority of the algae is used to make natural food colourings, the rest of the algae is harvested and used as the base for black algae dye.
