As we continue to look for new, low impact ways to dye clothing, we’ve turned to the colouring tools of early man – minerals, rocks, and soils. Minerals don’t just tell the story of life on Earth, they also tell the story of colour. When our solar system settled into its current shape around 4.5 billion years ago, Earth was created by a series of galactic collisions. Tectonic plates began to form. And geological life and biological life fused together to create vast mineral deposits in the Earth’s upper crust. So when prehistoric man first picked up a prehistoric paintbrush, they turned to the ground around them. Today, instead of using those minerals to paint cave walls, we’re using them to dye clothing. Our Mineral Sweatshirt is garment dyed in a giant bath of ochre. There are only 2 by-products of this process – sediment, and water. Both of which can go straight back into nature.

Technical Details
Our first raw clothing
Since 2019 we’ve been exploring how we can create clothing using as few resources as possible. As well as creating clothing out of garbage streams that were heading to the dump, we’ve also been working with black algae, blue-green algae, pomegranates, mangoes, eucalyptus and beech. And now, we’re starting work on raw clothing. We’re focusing on nature’s most brilliant materials, then doing as little as humanly possible to turn them from plants into clothing. And it all starts with our Raw Hemp Sweatpants, which are left in their raw and undyed state.
We’re using nature to make the colour white
We’re already working with black algae to reinvent how the colour black is made. Now we’re using nature to remake the colour white. When you create a piece of clothing without putting it through a dyeing process, the final colour depends entirely on the natural pigment of the fibres that have been used. So the Raw Hemp Sweatpants are an off-white because that’s the natural colour of the plant’s fibres. It’s built from a blend of organic hemp and organic cotton which makes it incredibly soft. And with no dyes, you’re looking at a new way of creating the colour white by using the inside of the plant itself.
Making clothes like our ancestors made them
While most industries can be improved by heading forwards as fast as possible, one of the biggest advances clothing can make is by heading backwards a few thousand years to when our ancestors were making clothes from grass, tree bark, animal skins and plants. Today we’re trying to get back to using nature to make clothes that require as little energy as possible and leave almost no trace of their existence at the end of their lives. And this means breaking apart many of the standard processes used in the industry today.
