Size + Fit
The Full Metal Puffer is designed with a loose fit, with plenty of room for other layers underneath. If you prefer a closer fit, we recommend you go for the size down.
Most jackets are not famous. But our original Full Metal Jacket is. Made from over 11 kilometres of copper it has won TIME Best Inventions and even made its own special guest appearance on the Joe Rogan Podcast. Now we’ve taken the Full Metal Jacket, added even more copper, and turned it into the Full Metal Puffer.
Copper is one of the most advanced materials in our solar system. Thrown out of supernovas billions of years ago, it became central to the rise of civilisation, creating tools and sterilising water, before enabling modern day communication, transport, and electrical power. We started experimenting with it as we looked for material that could become a building block for intelligent clothing, while offering us disease resistance on Earth and up in space.
To build the Full Metal Puffer out of 60% copper, we start with electrolytic rods which we extrude like spaghetti to make strands so thin they have to be measured by lasers and can only be seen with a microscope. We then apply a series of very thin coats of lacquer to protect the copper from corrosion, cure the material for 6 days, and weave it on rapier looms before scouring, heat-setting and drying. The result is a jacket that warps and ripples in the light, and looks like CGI even when you’re standing right next to it. The Full Metal Puffer is also built with an advanced waterproof and breathable membrane that can open and close to respond to different weather conditions, while remaining permanently waterproof and windproof. And it’s packed with 100% recycled 700 fill down to keep you warm in sub-zero temperatures.
The surface of the puffer looks computer generated when you’re next to it in real life. And that’s because the hundreds of thousands of moving copper parts warp and ripple like water in the light. But you’d never know the puffer was made out of metal just by touching it. The copper is soft and malleable. It’s only under a microscope you can see the individual copper strands running through every jacket.
To turn the Full Metal Puffer into a high performance and highly waterproof piece of gear, the copper layer is laminated with an advanced waterproof and breathable membrane called c_change®. Instead of remaining static, the membrane can open and close to respond to different weather conditions as they happen, while remaining permanently waterproof and windproof.
As the air temperature rises, the membrane opens up so that excess sweat and heat can escape through the jacket. But while the membrane’s polymer structure opens up to become extremely permeable to water vapour leaving the body, it remains completely waterproof on the outside. It means that even if you held a jacket under a downpour in extreme heat, the jacket will only ever let the water through one way, while still letting heat pass through it.
The Full Metal Puffer is designed with a loose fit, with plenty of room for other layers underneath. If you prefer a closer fit, we recommend you go for the size down.
