The humble chore jacket has already survived a couple of hundred years on the backs of French pig farmers, Jackson Pollock flinging paint around, and Paul Newman eating way too many prison eggs in Cool Hand Luke.

So having survived a couple of hundred years already – and clearly not going out of fashion anytime soon – we decided to help it survive the next couple of centuries by building the first Indestructible Chore Jacket.

We've built our own classic chore with a cotton and Dyneema® twill, produced in Japan by a 180-year-old textile mill who are famous for making clothing that's both really strong and really soft at the same time. 15x stronger than steel, Dyneema® is the single strongest fibre known to man today. And we've used it to build the world's strongest pants, belts, t shirts and jackets.

Working with a timeless design

The chore jacket was originally known as the 'bleu de travail.' Developed as utilitarian workwear for French farmhands and artisans in the 19th century, it was made of heavy cotton moleskin and dyed with a deep indigo which hid the dirt. It also faded beautifully. Not that French farmers would have cared. They liked that it was tough, roomy and had big patch pockets to stash tools, pipe-tobacco, and maybe a couple of pastries.
We've taken the timeless chore jacket, and added another 200 years to its life expectancy.

From farmers to film sets

By the 1890s it had crossed the Atlantic, where Carhartt started mass-producing its own version in brown canvas. Half a century later Jackson Pollock started flinging paint around while wearing a chore jacket. And Paul Newman navigated the American prison system in one in Cool Hand Luke. So having survived a couple of hundred years already – and clearly not going out of fashion anytime soon – we decided to help it survive the next couple of centuries by building the first Indestructible Chore Jacket.

We decided to increase its life expectancy

The Indestructible Chore Jacket combines cotton with 5% Dyneema®, making it super resistant to rips and abrasion. We use the Martindale abrasion resistance test on all our Indestructible gear to simulate decades of wear and tear. A mechanical thumb rubs the surface of the fabric repeatedly until the fibres start to break. Most fabrics are tested to 20,000 cycles. The Indestructible Chore Jacket’s fabric easily reached 100,000 cycles, where the test stops.
We've rebuilt the chore jacket with the world's strongest fibre™.
We worked with a 180-year-old Japanese textile company to create our own cotton and Dyneema® twill.

Built with a 180 year old Japanese fabric mill

To make the Indestructible Chore Jacket, we worked with Toyoshima, a Japanese textile company that's been in operation for over 180 years. Toyoshima blends the Dyneema® filaments with cotton during yarn production. After knitting, the fabric is finished so it has the softness and breathability you'd expect from cotton.

What the jacket feels like

If you've ever come across ultra-lightweight Dyneema® used in backpacks, you'll know it feels and sounds a bit like paper. But the Indestructible Chore Jacket feels (and sounds) just like a chore jacket should. You wouldn't know it has Dyneema® in it until you need it. And that's because the Dyneema® is woven in with the cotton during the weaving process.

A timeless, minimalist design

Our Indestructible Chore Jacket is a cleaner, more minimal and day-to-night take on the traditional design. Chest pockets are generous but reverse entry and discreet with invisible snaps. A zipped side pocket is all but invisible and there's also an internal zip pocket, for those essentials you want to keep close to your chest. We've added a recycled polyester fill for extra warmth. You might notice the occasional white 'slub' in the fabric. That's just the Dyneema® yarn, so no need to be alarmed.
Dyneema® is usually used in body armour, not chore jackets.

Why you find Dyneema in survival situations

To understand just how tough Dyneema® is you have to look at how it's being deployed in the world today. It's used to make bullet resistant vests, armour and helmets. It's used in panels on tanks to protect against stronger ballistic threats like anti-tank projectiles. And you'll find it in bulletproof cockpit doors in most commercial planes in the US. Unlike other high-strength materials it's so light it floats on water, and it's resistant to the long-term effects of moisture, UV light and chemicals, which is why it's now also being used in artificial limbs.

The colder it gets, the stronger it gets

Don't worry if you end up somewhere freezing. Dyneema® gets stronger as it gets colder. So when it's not being used to make insanely hardy jackets, you'll find Dyneema® ropes on giant ships and deep-water oil rigs that have to perform in freezing seas. A mooring rope on a winch buried under heavy ice on a ship sailing in extreme conditions can't afford to fail. As the temperature drops down to -50°C the Dyneema® ropes gain 5-10% strength. Projections show that the rope would gain even more strength if it dropped to -150°C. And it doesn't just get stronger, it also loses no strength in relation to abrasion resistance or cutting.
