Titan is Saturn’s largest moon. And one day it could be our next home. It comes with an atmosphere 4x thicker than Earth’s, and it’s only the second body in our Solar System known to have liquid on its surface – we live on the other one. So just like the Moon and Mars it has potential. However, Titan is cryogenically cold. With average surface temperatures of -179°C, it’s twice as cold as anything recorded on Earth. It also has methane monsoons and cryovolcanoes spewing out jets of freezing hydrocarbon rain.

As we continue to build clothing for planet Earth and beyond, embracing the challenges of Titan forces us to push the technological boundaries of extreme cold weather clothing. And it’s why our Titan Fleece Jacket is the only fleece on Earth – or Titan – that gets stronger as the weather gets colder. It combines an ultra-warm fleece on the inside with the strongest fibre in the world on the outside. It even has a magnetic zip with an emergency pull cord for blizzards.

While fleece jackets are brilliant at keeping you warm, they’re definitely not known for their strength. Most simply rip or shred apart on the first sign of any kind of impact. But by building our new Titan Fleece Jacket for the cryogenically cold temperatures of space, we’ve completely reinvented what a fleece can do here on Earth. It’s not only the strongest and warmest fleece on any planet, but it actually gets stronger as the weather gets colder.

  • Turning the world’s strongest fibre into the world’s warmest fleece

    We turned to Dyneema® to build the outside of the Titan Fleece Jacket, because it’s not only the strongest fibre on Earth, but it gets stronger as it gets colder. The challenge of course is that Dyneema® is not exactly known for its cuddliness. You normally find it on the side of tanks. And in body armour. Not building fleeces or teddy bears. So we had to find a way to keep its strength, but turn it soft.

  • 15x stronger than steel Dyneema® gets stronger as it gets colder

    Dyneema® not only combines extreme strength with low weight, but it actually gets stronger as it gets colder. It’s why it’s used today to make the mooring lines on giant ships and deep-water oil rigs in freezing seas. As the temperature drops down to -50°C the Dyneema® ropes gain 5-10% strength. Projections show that the rope would gain even more strength if it dropped to -150°C. And it doesn’t just get stronger, it also loses no strength in relation to abrasion resistance or cutting.

We re-engineered Dyneema® in Germany

Our mission to turn the world’s toughest fibre into the world’s warmest fleece took us to Germany, the land of engineering. To make soft fabric you need really thin fibres. So we took bundles of Dyneema® fibres and heated them up, stretched them out and broke them over and over again to make them as thin as possible. We then spun these ultra-thin fibres into a yarn with a small amount of polyester and elastane on a circular knitting machine. The result is a Dyneema® fleece with a 3 dimensional honeycomb structure that’s unlike anything ever seen before.

The first 3D Dyneema®

Building clothing for Titan has meant we’ve had to reinvent what a fleece can do right here on Earth. And it’s why the Titan Fleece Jacket looks like it’s arrived from outer space. The only way to accurately describe the outside of the jacket is that it’s 3 dimensional. Small white orbs of Dyneema® cover the surface of the jacket, so anything that comes into contact with the jacket will hit them first. This 3D geometric texture also creates hundreds of air pockets that make the fabric softer and warmer.

It will survive a high speed fall and drag on concrete

The Darmstadt abrasion resistance test is normally used to assess the durability of motorcycle gear by recreating high speed falls onto concrete. Three samples of the fleece’s material are attached to a machine with mechanical rotating arms which hover over a slab of rough concrete. The arms then start spinning as they approach the slab, simulating a high speed fall and 30 metre drag, by slamming the material into the concrete. Whereas most fleeces would simply shred on the first impact, our material easily passes with the machine rotating at 265rpm, which is equivalent to a 45kmph fall and drag.

Reinforced with a material designed to survive warzones

We didn’t just stop with Dyneema® on the outside. We also reinforced the outer body of the Titan Fleece Jacket with a material originally developed for the British Special Forces in Afghanistan. Lightweight, waterproof, triple-layered, and made from a high-tenacity nylon, it’s weather resistant, and built to cope with rapid temperature changes without getting damaged. We’ve placed it around key areas like the hood, pockets, central zipper and cuffs, to add weather protection and strength where you need it.

  • Lined with ultra-soft thermal fleece

    While the Titan Fleece Jacket is insanely tough on the outside, the inside is lined with a thick and ultra-soft Polartec fleece. Made from 74% recycled material and bluesign approved, it has a knit structure built for strength and durability as well as an extremely high warmth-to-weight ratio. Its fibres are engineered to trap heat in thermal air pockets around your body, while letting any sweat vapour escape so you stay comfortable.

A magnetic front zipper built for speed

No one has been to Titan yet. But we’re assuming you won’t want to be fumbling around with zippers when you're being battered by a space blizzard. That’s why the Titan Fleece Jacket has been designed to be opened and closed while wearing thick padded gloves. The front zipper is magnetic, so it’s quick and easy to engage and fasten. The heavy-duty zip base automatically aligns itself with magnets, so the teeth lock into place by themselves. And a custom oversized pull cord lets you do the jacket up one-handed.

Five pockets and three gadget loops

You’ll find two large fleece-lined pockets that fasten with water resistant zippers on the sides of the jacket. Layered under these pockets are two more giant pockets protected by angled storm flaps that fasten shut with metal snap fasteners. There’s another small zipped pocket inside the jacket for stashing valuable items. And 3 bungee loops on the chest let you clip on extra gear like ice screws or carabiners.
