Shielding T Shirt

Built with silver-plated wood pulp, it shields you from WiFi and Bluetooth.
CHF 395
Model is 6ft 1 / 187cm with a 38 inch / 96cm chest, and wears size Large.
  • Built with shielding technology
  • Silver plated fibres that are antibacterial, anti-static and conductive
  • Knitted from a soft modal blend that's more absorbent than cotton

Long before the Curiosity Rover was sent to Mars to search for signs of life, it had to be tested here on Earth. So NASA created an electromagnetic shielding tent that was designed to completely block out external electromagnetic radiation during testing… like someone sending a text, turning the microwave on, or chatting with the James Webb telescope.

We've already brought that kind of shielding technology to jackets and pants and now we’ve embedded it in a super comfortable t shirt. It's knitted from a soft modal blend threaded with silver plated fibres that are naturally antibacterial, anti-static, and conductive – disrupting and reflecting the electromagnetic spectrum used by phones, WiFi and Bluetooth.

Built with electromagnetic shielding technology

Long before the Curiosity Rover was sent to Mars to search for signs of life, every single one of its components had to be tested here on Earth. A specialist lab was commissioned to build an electromagnetic compatibility shielding tent to protect Curiosity during the tests. It had to completely block all external electromagnetic radiation to prevent disruption. Everything from someone sending a text next door to chatting with the James Webb telescope. We’ve now embedded that kind of shielding technology in a t shirt you can wear every day.

Silver-plated fibres in the material reflect electromagnetic energy

The Shielding T Shirt is knitted from a soft modal blend threaded with silver-plated nylon fibres. Because silver conducts electricity, these fibres can absorb and reflect incoming electromagnetic energy from devices and networks around you. And because silver is both conductive and antibacterial, the same fibres that interact with electromagnetic fields also make the fabric naturally anti-static and hostile to odour-causing bacteria.

A recap of the electromagnetic spectrum

To understand the science behind the material we need to take a look at the electromagnetic spectrum – laid out during the 19th century through the work of scientists like Sir William Herschel, James Clerk Maxwell and Heinrich Hertz. The spectrum shows the different types of electromagnetic radiation that allow the transfer of energy and information throughout the universe. There are seven separate groups – radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, x-rays and gamma rays.
Silver-plated nylon fibres form a flexible conductive network running throughout the material.

From radio waves, to UV rays, to gamma rays from nuclear decay

As you travel through the spectrum from left to right, each group increases in frequency and decreases in wavelength, which means increasing in photon energy but decreasing in range. At the low end of the spectrum radio waves and microwaves can travel thousands of miles and are used for things like mobile networks, satellite communications, TV signals, and radar. At the other end we have ionising waves. Ultraviolet, x-rays and gamma rays can’t travel as far as low-frequency waves, but they’re powerful enough to alter atoms and damage organic matter, which is why we get sunburned, and why gamma rays from nuclear decay are so lethal.

A t shirt that reduces exposure to radio waves and microwaves

The Shielding T Shirt’s silver-plated fibres create a conductive network that interferes with incoming radio and microwave energy. Lab tests on the material show shielding effectiveness from 30MHz to 10GHz, with the strongest reduction at lower frequencies and attenuation across common mobile, WiFi and Bluetooth bands. It doesn’t turn you invisible to signals, but it measurably reduces the amount of electromagnetic energy that reaches your body.

How silver wipes out bacteria

Just like the copper we use to build our Full Metal Jacket, silver is powerfully antimicrobial. When bacteria comes into contact with silver, the silver releases positively charged ions that punch a hole in the cell membrane before moving in and inhibiting bacterial growth. The ions latch onto the bacteria’s DNA and prevent it from functioning or reproducing. It’s why silver is added to medical materials and devices around the world to help heal wounds.
The same silver fibres that interact with electromagnetic fields also make the material antibacterial and anti-static.

A t shirt you can wear for longer and wash less

The silver-plated nylon in the t shirt makes it naturally resistant to the odour-causing bacteria that build up during wear. It stays fresher for longer, which means you can wear it more and wash it less.

Supersoft, not stiff and metallic

Despite its metal content, the Shielding T Shirt is super soft and comfortable. Almost 70% of the material we use is modal, a regenerated cellulosic fibre derived from beech wood pulp, first developed in Japan in the early 1950s. Modal fibres are finer, smoother and rounder than cotton, so the fabric has a clean, almost silky surface and a fluid drape that flatters the body without clinging. Against the skin it feels cool and smooth from the first wear, and unlike many brushed cottons, modal keeps that softness wash after wash.

Made with a material 50% more absorbent than cotton

Modal is also up to 50% more absorbent than cotton. It pulls moisture away from the skin and spreads it across the fabric where it can evaporate, so the wearer stays drier and more comfortable across a full day without the clammy feel of synthetics.

We’ve added polyamide for tensile strength and elastane for stretch

While modal ensures the t shirt is soft and comfortable, polyamide boosts tensile strength and abrasion resistance, so the material is less prone to thinning, pilling, or losing its surface quality over time. It also means hems, necklines and sleeves hold their shape through repeated washing. We also added 5% elastane for stretch, so the t shirt moves with you and keeps its shape.

Inside out on purpose

We’ve built the t shirt with the material’s purl side facing out. Technically that means it’s inside out, but it gives the surface a subtle texture. Side seams are displaced and angled towards the back to reduce irritation. The shoulder seams are stabilised with silicone tape sewn into the seam to prevent stretch and maintain structure over time.

Why we’re tackling electromagnetic radiation

We’ve been working on future material science challenges since we started the company – from disease resistance and climate change, to space travel and resource scarcity. And next up is the electromagnetic spectrum. While it does a great job of helping information and energy travel throughout the universe, as we enter an era of cybersecurity breaches, geopolitical instability, the first crewed missions to Mars, and cosmic radiation exposure, it’s also going to present an increased threat.

The journey to radiation-proof clothing

Gamma rays might have turned Bruce Banner into The Hulk, but the reality is that radiation and human beings don’t go well together. Exposure to cosmic radiation will be a real threat on board future deep space missions, and we’ll need solutions to reduce radiation sickness or the risk of cancer and degenerative diseases. So while the Shielding t shirt only reduces low-frequency waves for now, it’s another step towards everyday clothing that is fully radiation-proof.
