Salt-Shrunk Jacket
This M65 field jacket is salt-shrunk using a 400 year old Japanese technique.
While most cultures have added salt to their food, the Japanese spent the last 400 years adding it to their clothes – mixing saline and heat to distort fabric, making it stronger, denser and more breathable.
We took that process and reinvented it. Working with one of Japan’s leading textile mills, we doused recycled nylon in a benzyl alcohol solution, then heat-shrunk it to disrupt the fibres at a molecular level. The result is the textured, lightweight and water-repellent outer shell of a radically re-engineered field jacket.
Inspired by the iconic M-65, the jacket is fitted with four storm-flap pockets on the outside and a secure zipped chest pocket inside. Metal snap fasteners, a two-way Riri zipper and twin-needle stitching at all stress points make it as rugged as it is technical. And it comes in a military green and royal blue that make the most of the material’s crumpled, reprogrammed surface.

Technical Details

Salt-shrinking uses nothing more than salt, water and heat to permanently alter a material’s texture and structure.

Dyed and salt-shrunk in the Fukui Prefecture
Salt-shrinking creates materials with micro-topographies that resist flattening, breathe differently, and age with character. These aren’t just aesthetic effects, they are tactical advantages. Heat moves off the body faster. Clothes cling less. Movement is easier. Updating this tradition, our salt-shrunk material is dyed and shrunk by Kowa, one of Japan’s leading textile mills, in Fukui Prefecture.

We’ve re-invented a centuries-old technique to chemically reprogram recycled nylon.

Molecular-level reprogramming makes Salt-Shrunk Jackets durable, breathable and each one unique.

Based on the M-65 field jacket
The M-41 field jacket was a lightweight, utilitarian solution for the battlefields of Europe and the Pacific during WWII. The M-65 updated the design for the demands of the Vietnam War. As army surplus, the M-65 became counter intuitively counter cultural before Pacino in Serpico, De Niro in Taxi Driver, and then Schwarzenegger in The Terminator made it a (blood-soaked) big screen icon. The Salt-Shrunk Jacket is our tough, re-engineered and refined take on the classic M-65 design.
