100 Year Field Jacket
A 20th century icon rebuilt to survive the next 100 years.
- Highly waterproof, windproof and breathable
- Abrasion and rip resistant
- Six external pockets and two internal pockets
The field jacket has earned a reputation not only as one of the toughest military garments of the 20th century, but also one of its most enduring style icons. From WWII battlefronts and the dense jungles of Vietnam, to silver screen immortality on the backs of Pacino in Serpico and De Niro in Taxi Driver, it’s one of the few items of clothing a man can own that is resistant to trends. So we decided to make it resistant to pretty much everything else, too.
We’ve taken the original M65 field jacket’s functional design and rebuilt it using an advanced three-layer material originally designed for extreme-weather motorcycle gear. Not only does it provide the highest levels of protection against rain, wind and snow, but it’s also tough enough to withstand a high-velocity encounter with the tarmac. The jacket is built with 8 pockets fitted with hidden zips, a heavy-duty two-way metal front zipper, and an adjustable fleece-lined collar and cuffs.
Technical Details
The field jacket has remained resistant to trends. So we decided to make it resistant to pretty much everything else, too.
It will take more than 100 years to break the fabric
The jacket’s outer face is highly resistant to rips and abrasion. We use a test called the Martindale abrasion resistance test to simulate how quickly the material will break down. A mechanical thumb rubs the surface of the fabric repeatedly until the fibres start to break. The test goes up to 100,000 revolutions which is the equivalent of a lifetime of wear and tear. While a normal polyester fabric can survive around 25,000 revolutions, the jacket easily passed 100,000 cycles of wear. Even then the fabric had to be checked with a magnifying glass to see if any fibres had broken. None had.
We’ve taken the original M65 field jacket and rebuilt it using an advanced three-layer Swiss supermaterial
How the membrane works in the heat and wet
As the air temperature rises, the membrane opens up so that excess sweat and heat can escape through the jacket. But while the membrane’s polymer structure opens up to become extremely permeable to water vapour leaving the body, it remains completely waterproof on the outside. It means that even if you held a jacket under a downpour in extreme heat, the jacket will only ever let the water through one way, while still letting heat pass through it.
The outside of the jacket is built with a material originally created to handle torrential rain while racing a motorbike.
Four large layered front pockets, and two more inside
You’ll find two more large fleece-lined side pockets that fasten with heavy-duty metal zippers on the sides of the jacket. Then layered over these pockets are two giant bellows pockets that can expand to fit more gear. The bellows pockets are protected by angled storm flaps and fasten shut with metal snap fasteners. On the inside of the jacket you’ll also find two layered pockets made from a high-stretch mesh.
While the jacket’s membrane will open up to let excess heat escape, it remains completely waterproof.
Born in the jungles of Vietnam, the M65 field jacket was designed to work anywhere on the planet – from freezing cities to dense tropical jungles.
Engineered for movement
The jacket is constructed with detailed panelling at the arms to help you move freely. The articulated sleeves follow the natural shape of your arm whatever way you move. And we’ve built in a long back vent at the hem to keep air flowing around your body and make sure you never feel restricted.
The M65 was made for jungle warfare
It was in the jungles of Vietnam that the most iconic field jacket was born – the M65. In the face of torrential rain and wind, it stood out as the most versatile and functional jacket ever built. While almost any jacket would have been too hot and heavy for combat in the jungle, the M65 worked perfectly in the post-monsoon months when temperatures cooled. So when we decided to build a 100 Year Field Jacket, this was our starting point.
