Our Black Algae range is designed to reinvent how the colour black is made

The colour black is everywhere. From our phones to our cars to the ink in our pens. But black has a dark side. Every black thing you own is likely to contain carbon black – a pigment derived from petroleum. So we’re on a search for the new black. Over the last few years we've been working with US biomaterials company Living Ink to accelerate the adoption of black algae as a way to colour clothing. The algae we use starts life in huge open-air ponds where it grows by feeding on sunlight, carbon dioxide, water and nutrients.

The Black Algae T Shirt is made with seaweed from Icelandic fjords, and the world’s first black algae dye

Our aim is to reinvent the way in which the colour itself is made using the world’s first dye made from black algae. Over 5 years of R&D have gone into creating the first ever black algae dye. And we spent more than 6 months finding the perfect blend of materials to combine it with. The Black Algae T Shirt is made from organic cotton, pulped eucalyptus, and brown algae – a type of seaweed harvested from Iceland’s North Atlantic fjords. We garment dye every t shirt by fully submerging it in black algae dye, before emerizing it to make it phenomenally soft.

Every pair of Black Algae Pants and Shorts starts with a world-class base material – a rare cotton called Karnak Menoufi. One of the lightest, softest materials on the planet, Karnak Menoufi is a silk-like cotton that’s only found in the Nile Delta, and only grows in the years when the rain, soil and wind conditions are perfect. We combine this with ultrafine nylon and elastane for durability and stretch, before submerging the finished pants in a giant bath of the world’s first black algae dye.

The original polo shirt, reinvented with the world’s first black algae dye

The polo shirt was one of the first pieces of high performance sports gear. And we’ve stayed true to its roots by using the same base fabric as the very first ones invented in the 1920s – cotton piqué. But we’ve brought it into the next century by dyeing it in the world’s first black algae dye that starts life in giant ponds. Each shirt is built from a textured, breathable cotton and two bio-resin buttons made from plant waste, before being garment dyed in black algae dye for a soft and relaxed feel and finish.
