Known as ‘The Golden Fleece,’ cashmere is one of the world’s softest and rarest materials. While most sheep will produce around 3kg of wool each year, a cashmere goat will only grow about 200 grams. And that’s because they only shed their fleece once a year, and the softest fibres that we use are only combed from their underbellies.
We get our cashmere from the goats that live on the high peaks of Mongolia, Northern China, Nepal and Kashmir – regions defined by harsh temperatures, brutal winds, and dramatic seasonal changes. So while the local humans built yurts to protect themselves from the elements, the goats developed a rugged outer fleece that protects an undercoat of ultralight, ultrasoft and ultrawarm fibres.
To build the Planet Earth Cashmere Scarf, we’ve stuck entirely to materials produced by nature – combining the cashmere fibres with baby alpaca wool to add volume, and silk to add strength.
Technical Details
Fibre for fibre, cashmere is one of the most efficient insulation systems on the planet.
Cashmere goats developed an undercoat of ultralight, ultrasoft and ultrawarm fibres.
Their fibres are exceptionally fine
The fibres from the goats’ underbellies are exceptionally fine – they’re typically 14 to 19 microns in diameter, in comparison with a human hair which is around 70 microns. And it’s this fineness that allows them to bend incredibly easily, which in turn lets them trap an enormous amount of air to retain heat.
The Planet Earth Cashmere Scarf blends cashmere for softness, baby alpaca wool for warmth, and silk for strength.
Spun in Italy by specialists in cashmere blends
The cashmere, alpaca and silk blend is spun in Cariaggi, an Italian mill based in the Marche region that specialises in fine cashmere and cashmere-blend yarns. They’re known for their strict fibre selection, controlled blending and intensive testing to reduce pilling.
