Ski pants face tougher conditions than almost any other piece of clothing, from ferocious blizzards, icy chairlifts and high speed falls, to steel edges, sweat, rocks and crampons. So we’ve built our 100 Year Ski Pants from a material originally designed to handle torrential rain while racing a motorbike – where the falls are fast and the water hits you at high speed and with high pressure.

Ultra-tough, highly breathable, and waterproof to over 43,000mm, the 100 Year Ski Pants come with an advanced, Swiss-built membrane that contracts in the cold to retain warmth, and opens up in the heat to disperse sweat.

Whether you’re skiing the resort or deep in the backcountry, the four-way stretch detachable bib, waterproof zippers, storm flaps, quick-release magnetic fasteners, and cross-flow venting will keep you dry and comfortable all day. On the mountain, they’re some of the most technical ski pants ever made. Off it, they double as the toughest waterproof pants ever built.

Created with a Swiss supermaterial

Ski pants face everything from brutal winter snowstorms to wet and heavy spring conditions, while taking a beating from boots and bindings, steel edges, rocks and crampons. So we turned to the same material that we use for our 100 Year Jacket to build the toughest, most waterproof pants on Earth. Created in a cutting-edge Swiss mill, this 3 layer fabric is constructed from an ultra-tough outer shell, and an intelligent membrane that changes its behaviour in the face of rain, snow, ice, cold, sweat and heat. As the weather gets crazier, these pants are built to cope with whatever the sky throws at them.

It will take more than 100 years to break the fabric

Let’s start with toughness. The Martindale abrasion resistance test is the way clothing is tested to see how quickly it will break down. A mechanical thumb rubs the surface of the fabric repeatedly until the fibres start to break. The test goes up to 100,000 revolutions which is the equivalent of a lifetime of wear and tear. A normal polyester fabric can survive around 25,000 revolutions. These pants are made from a highly abrasion resistant rip-proof fabric with an ultra-tough polyurethane membrane, so easily passed 100,000 cycles of wear. Even then the fabric had to be checked with a magnifying glass to see if any fibres had broken. None had.

Tough on the outside, smooth on the inside

It wasn’t enough for us to build a pair of ski pants that could simply last for 100 years. We wanted to build one comfortable enough to spend the rest of your life in. So while the surface of the pants is highly rip and tear resistant, the inside is smooth. And with every panel laser cut then stitched and bonded for waterproofness, all the seams are built to withstand high water pressure, meaning as wet as the outside of your ski pants gets, you’ll stay dry.

Waterproof to 43,000mm

Water is strong enough to carve rock over time, so it’s certainly strong enough to get through most ski pants eventually. Storms that rage all day on the mountain or wet snow on a chairlift pressing into the fabric, will all help water find a way in. That’s why the 100 Year Ski Pants use a material that was originally built to handle torrential rain while racing a motorbike – where the water hits the material at high speed and with high pressure. The pants are built with an advanced Swiss membrane that tests up to 47,000mm waterproof in the lab and averages out at 43,000mm. You won’t find numbers like this anywhere else.

How we build our 100 Year Ski Pants

Designing a pair of ski pants that can last for 100 years is an exercise in no expense spared craftsmanship, and it’s as much about what you can’t see as what you can. It starts with bespoke materials created by Schoeller in Switzerland, before being followed by hundreds of separate construction processes. Each seam is first stitched, then fully bonded and sealed to make the pants completely watertight. And where the lab testing for waterproofness normally stops, we simply doubled the pressure. The result is a ski pant that you can wear in any terrain and any weather and emerge unscathed.

How waterproofness is measured

Waterproofness is the amount of pressure a material can withstand before water goes through it. A rating of 10,000mm for a material is considered waterproof, as it means that if you stood a 10 metre high column of water on that material, the water wouldn’t go through. The higher the score, the less chance snow has of getting you wet. Measuring waterproofness has become something of an arms race in outdoor gear over the last few decades. And it’s an arms race that the 100 Year Ski Pants win.

Highly waterproof and highly breathable at the same time

The issue with creating something crazily waterproof is breathability. The more water can’t come through one way, the harder it is to let it come out the other. A rubber wetsuit would never let any rain through, but if you tried wearing one while climbing with skis on your back, you might pass out, as it won’t let heat or sweat escape. So we’ve worked with a membrane technology called c_change®, from Schoeller in Switzerland. The membrane can open and close to respond to different weather conditions as they happen, while remaining permanently waterproof and windproof.

How the membrane works in the cold

This c_change® membrane is the most intelligent part of the material. It mimics natural structures like flowers and pinecones, opening and closing in response to changes in temperature, humidity and sweat. It’s designed to keep you at a consistent temperature by combining really high breathability with heat retention. While it can open up like a series of microscopic vents to let heat escape, in the cold it closes itself like a protective barrier to stop heat leaving. So as soon as the temperature drops the membrane contracts to insulate you and retain heat close to the body.

How the membrane works in the heat and wet

As the air temperature rises, the membrane opens up so that excess sweat and heat can escape through the pants. But while the membrane’s polymer structure opens up to become extremely permeable to water vapour leaving the body, it remains completely waterproof on the outside. It means that even if you held the pants under a downpour in extreme heat, they will only ever let the water through one way, while still letting heat pass through.

An advanced bib keeps you dry and comfortable

The pants come with a high-waist bib built to keep out the cold and snow. The front and back of the bib are made from the same high-performance material as the rest of the pants, giving you extra protection from the elements if you need to open up your jacket. The shoulder straps are built from military-grade belt tape with quick-release magnetic fasteners. The sides of the bib are built with a soft, highly elastic, water-repellent fabric that’s designed for extreme comfort and breathability. There’s also a hidden stash pocket on the front.

Adjustable magnetic shoulder straps

The shoulder straps are made from an elastic, military-grade belt tape that lets you adjust the height of the pants to wear them the way you want to. You can pull them up high, or wear them low slung. Either way, they’ll stay up. You can quickly release both straps by pulling the cords that you’ll find attached to quick-release magnetic fasteners.

The bib is phenomenally strong and elastic

The sides of the bib are built from a material originally designed for compression gear, which makes it light, breathable and super strong. We’ve simply laser-cut it into the shape of non-compression gear, so the strength of the material remains identical, but you have none of the pressure on your muscles. Every inch has been knitted by 40 needles, which makes it very hard to break. If you were holding a metre of this fabric, you’d be able to stretch it to 1.5 metres in any direction, and as soon as you let go it would instantly return to its normal shape. It’s the same material we use to make our Ocean Shorts and Planet Earth Pants.

You can leave the bib at home if you need

If you’d rather hit the mountains without the bib, or you’re just putting the pants on to head out in a monsoon, the bib is completely detachable and you can simply leave it at home. A zipper runs all the way around the waist and lets you remove it in one go. You’ll still be left wearing the toughest, most waterproof pants on the planet. If you prefer the bib on, it fastens with a central zipper and metal press snap fasteners. And we’ve designed the attachment point between the bib and the pants to create a full seal by positioning the front zip just off-centre.

A custom engineered waistband

On either side of the waistband you’ll find two heavy-duty elastic Velcro adjusters to let you tighten the waist the way you want it. You pull them tight with large Cordura tabs. There are also five large belt loops if you prefer to leave nothing to chance, or if you’re wearing the pants without the bib. The belt loops are constructed with reinforced stitching and then bonded for increased durability. The zip fly is protected by two storm flaps, one internal, one external, as well as two metal snap fasteners and a second, lockable fastener.

Giant leg vents will help you cool off

The membrane in the 100 Year Ski Pants is designed to regulate your temperature and let sweat escape. But if you’re working exceptionally hard on the skin track, we’ve built in a cross-flow venting system to let you dump heat even faster. Two long vents run down the outside of each thigh, and you’ll find another giant vent on the inside of each leg built with a two-way zipper. All the vents open up completely to let air flow in and around your legs as fast as possible if you’re hiking or ski touring. But the zips are all fully waterproofed, so when they’re closed, you’ll stay dry.

Equipped with fleece-lined pockets

You’ll find two large pockets on the outside of the pants. Both pockets are fully waterproofed, protected by external storm flaps, and made with rubberised zip pulls. On the inside they’re lined with a soft fleece, so you can still keep your hands warm if you have to take your gloves off at the summit. We also designed a small hidden waterproof pocket on the front of the pants to store a ski pass.

Cut for extreme movement

Despite being insanely tough, the 100 Year Ski Pants are incredibly comfortable to wear for hours at a time in challenging conditions. Every seam is engineered to move with you as you ski, snowboard or climb. And the high-stretch bib, adjustable waist, and articulated construction of the legs, follow your body whichever direction it goes, so you’ll never feel restricted.

Wear them on or off the mountain

When you’re out on the mountain, elasticated snow gaiters on the inside of each ankle make a seal to stop snow getting in. Silicon grippers keep them fixed in place. You’ll also find side leg openings to help you adjust your boots quickly. But when you’ve kicked your boots off at the end of the day and want to stick your trainers back on, you can simply tighten the pants with the metal snap fasteners at the hem to walk around without tripping over. And whether you’re on or off the mountain, these are the toughest and most breathable waterproof pants you’ll find.
