Your great-great grandfather lived off grid. Your children’s children will live off grid. So the question is, could you? If you had to start from scratch, build a house, generate your own energy, plant crops, find your own water, and raise a chicken or two?
Today we are truly plugged into the matrix – with the electrical grid, running water, gas, and Amazon all on tap. But what if the grid is a blip? After all, we survived for two million years without it. With many predicting wars over natural resources in the not-too-distant future, being disconnected from the production of everything we rely on for survival doesn’t feel like a great idea.
So our Off Grid range is built for a future in which you have to rebuild your life with your bare hands. Built from ultra-lightweight, high-strength Dyneema, the Off Grid Shell is the strongest rain jacket there is. Highly windproof, tear-resistant and waterproof, it comes with giant storage pockets and an incredible strength-to-weight ratio. It’s an all-terrain, all-purpose shell for life off grid.
Built with Dyneema
The Off Grid Shell is an all-terrain, all-purpose rain shell for life off grid. Highly windproof and tear-resistant, it has an extremely high strength-to-weight ratio thanks to the Dyneema composite we’ve used to build it. Originally created in a lab, Dyneema was used to make high-strength sails for racing out on the ocean, where high strength, low weight, and resistance to UV matters. Today it’s used to make ultra-lightweight high-strength tents and backpacks.
It’s designed to take a beating
Rain shells aren’t known for being tough. But if you’re heading for a life off grid, you might as well take the strongest rain jacket there is. You’re far more likely to be carrying knives, axes, trowels, tools or potatoes covered in mud than you are an iPad. So the shell is tear resistant and stain resistant. And the material is so tough that if you ever get tired of the jacket you can use it for other stuff. Got a hole in your bucket? Just cut one of the pockets off the jacket and you’ll be able to use it to repair it. Need some rope? Cut some strips off the jacket.
Don’t break it in gently
The Off Grid Shell is not quiet and it’s not soft. This type of Dyneema is noisy. You will wake up the chickens, the dog, the horses and maybe the neighbours. But it is the toughest rain shell you can get. In fact it’s so tough the material needs breaking in, like you would with a pair of boots. Luckily the more you beat it up the better it will look. And it’s over-geared for a reason. If you’re living off grid and your rain shell is your outer layer, it needs to be super practical.
Going off grid is not a beauty contest
Over the last decade the real focus for shells appears to have been making them all the different colours of the rainbow. But going off grid isn’t the time to be focusing on colour choice. So maybe you like jackets that look like battered steel. Maybe you don’t. But this type of high-strength Dyneema only comes in one colour, and you’re looking at it. It may look like it’s been shipped from some Mad Max version of the future, but at least you’ll be easier to find if you get lost in the wilderness looking for berries.
Two giant side pockets that go round the back
The shell comes with two giant side pockets that wrap around from the front of the jacket, over the hips and all the way to behind your back. You’re going to be carrying stuff all the time when you live off grid, so they’re big enough to carry anything you need to take with you, from tools to plants. If you simply want to keep your hands warm, they’re also fleece lined. There are also two large, angled chest pockets. And all the pockets are kept watertight with storm flaps and waterproof zips.
We’ve made the Dyneema waterproof
You’re going to spend a lot of time outdoors when you’re living off grid, which means you’re going to experience more weather. And if you’re relying on your own crops for food, you’ll also spend half your life praying for rain. So while Dyneema isn’t naturally waterproof, the Off Grid Shell is. We started tackling the idea of waterproofing Dyneema with our Indestructible Hat. Now we’ve carried it on with the Off Grid Shell.
Designed to keep the elements out
The shell is highly windproof and seam-sealed for waterproofness. There’s a peaked, fleece-lined hood that tightens with elasticated cords at the side and back. And you can tighten the cuffs as hard as you want thanks to a simple Velcro belt. The Velcro slides through a loop that you can then pull tight to create a seal around your wrists or gloves to protect you from the elements. The two-way front zipper is protected by storm flaps inside and out, and fastens with metal snap fasteners. And you’ll find pull cords at the waist and hem inside the jacket to pull it tight around you.
Resistant to stains, water and UV
Dyneema started life in the water – it was used to make incredibly light and extremely strong sails for the America's Cup. It’s naturally hydrophobic, which means it can’t absorb water, and it stays lightweight even in the wettest conditions. It’s UV resistant and chemically inert, so it performs well in dry, salty and humid conditions, as well as prolonged exposure to the sun. It’s also stain proof, which is ideal if you’re using the jacket to transport half a garden with you.
Giant storage pocket inside the jacket
If you open up the jacket, you’ll find a giant storage pocket on the inside left which can hold anything from a flask to the vegetables for your lunch. It’s built from an elastic mesh that expands the more you put inside it and is welded to the inner lining. The pocket closes with a cord fastener which allows you to adjust the tightness.
The Off Grid range
As parts of our planet become increasingly difficult to live on, and we’re forced into new and unknown terrain, we’re going to need solutions to help us. So our Off Grid range is a system of clothing we’ve designed to help you live remotely. It doesn’t matter whether you’re going off grid for a weekend, a year, or you’re selling up and unplugging for good. With vests and jackets made from the same stuff as body armour, high-strength utility pants and shorts, and the strongest rain shell ever built, we’ve focused on toughness, comfort and utility to help you live remotely and survive off the land.
